When you sent me to Augusta, I knew that I would only be as strong as the people I have behind me. Right now, I need your help.

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute needs $2.2 million dollars to rebuild the wharf and bulkhead at their site on Portland Harbor. If GMRI doesn't secure their funding by the end of this year, the US Coast Guard will repossess the site, and we will lose an incredible economic development opportunity.

We must let Legislative leadership and members of the Appropriations committee know that the bond for GMRI must be included in the Governor's bond package.

I am not a constituent of yours, but I'm writing today to encourage you to include LD 369, "An Act to Authorize a General Fund Bond Issue to Rebuild a Bulkhead and Wharf at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute", in the Governor's bond package. LD 369 calls for a $2.2 million dollar bond to supplement the $1.8 million dollars already secured for the site in State and Federal funds. Not only would the facilities at GMRI generate 413 marine research, technology, and education jobs, but is also expected to stimulate $105 million of construction investment and related one-time construction employment. These are jobs and economic stimulation the State desperately needs in this economy, and it is estimated the project would be ready to go within 3 weeks of securing funds. Most importantly, if GMRI doesn't secure the needed funds and start construction by the end of 2009, the US Coast Guard will repossess this site, and we will lose an incredible economic development opportunity. We can not afford to let this opportunity slip by. Please include the GRMI bond in the Governor's Bond package.
