4-day school week finds Statehouse support

AUGUSTA -- Legislators welcomed a proposal Monday that would allow schools to schedule four-day weeks, but they delayed a decision after getting hung up on logistics.

The Education Committee revisited a bill that would allow schools the four-day schedule and other calendar flexibility as cost-saving measures. The legislative panel also heard testimony on a similar bill, sponsored by Sen. Nancy Sullivan, D-Biddeford.

The legislators put off a decision as they worked out a combined version of the bills.

"I think it's important to get this out and give this flexibility to our schools," said Sen. Carol Weston, R-Montville.
