Alfond looking forward to his first term in the Maine Senate

December 3, 2008 -

AUGUSTA— Senator Justin Alfond, D-Cumberland County was sworn in to office for his first term in the Maine State Senate on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 for the 124th Legislative session.

A Maine native, Senator Alfond attended public schools in Waterville and Dexter, before his family moved to Boston, where he completed his high school education. Later, he attended Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in business management. After touring on the professional golf circuit, followed by jobs in Boston, Orlando, and New York City, Justin returned to Maine, where he launched the Maine chapter of The League of Young Voters.

Senator Alfond understands that this session will present many challenges, but is eager to start his work as a Senator: “I’m looking forward to undertaking the big issues; energy, healthcare, taxes and especially the budget. It will prove difficult, but I believe that this Legislature is up for the challenge.”

Though this is Senator Alfond’s first term in the Legislature, his work with The League of Young Voters helped Alfond to become familiar with the Maine State House.

“With The League, I helped to expand higher educational opportunity to all Mainers, to provide housing developers incentives to build affordable housing in the City of Portland and the Maine Energy Efficiency Disclosure Form for rental units in Maine. I look forward to serving and engaging my constituents,” Alfond said.

The 124th Legislative session officially convened this morning. The Maine Senate is currently comprised of 20 Democrats and 15 Republicans.
