Bond would aid rehab of condemned pier

So far, the institute has raised $1.8 million toward the project, which is estimated to cost $4 million. The proposed bond, if passed, would leave the group about $700,000 short.

"We had hoped to secure $2.2 million" in the bond package, Perkins said. "While it isn't everything we need, in this economic environment we're deeply grateful that we were able to secure that level of commitment."

State Sen. Justin Alfond, D-Portland, supported the larger funding amount but said the entire bond package was scaled back during the legislative debate.

"This will give them a big boost as they go out to donors and write grants," he said.
