Gendron, lawmakers spar over penalties
February 3, 2010 -
AUGUSTA — Feb. 10 looms as the date for a showdown between Maine Education Commissioner Susan Gendron and the Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs.
A flurry of conflicting statements issued by the appointed commissioner and elected lawmakers reflects a growing political rift between those intent on consolidating all schools in Maine under new, regional umbrellas and those who believe a one-size-fits-all approach does not create state educational funding equilibrium or educational excellence.
