Senator Justin Alfond Appointed to Serve as Senate Chair of the Education and Cultural Affairs
December 20, 2008 -
AUGUSTA—State Senator Justin Alfond, D-Cumberland County, has been appointed to serve as the Senate Chair on the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee and as a member of the Insurance and Financial Services Committee for the 124th Maine Legislature.
"I'm grateful for the confidence placed in me by my colleagues. I am looking forward to bringing my leadership to Maine's School Systems, and to Insurance and Financial Services," Alfond said.
As a product of Waterville and Dexter schools, Senator Alfond has seen first-hand what it means to have quality teachers, parental involvement and community support. Coupled with his experience organizing with the groundbreaking Opportunity Maine program, he has gained insight to the difficulties facing education in Maine.
"With our current budget deficit, the Education & Cultural Affairs Committee will be facing unprecedented challenges. I look forward to working with my fellow committee members to put Maine students first, while providing the most innovative learning experience possible," Senator Alfond added.
The Education and Cultural Affairs Committee oversees work related to the Maine Department of Education, Board of Education, University of Maine system, and Maine Community College System. As a member of the Insurance and Financial Services Committee, Senator Alfond will work on issues related to banking, financial institutions, credit unions, consumer credit, and other health insurance matters.
The appointments were made today by Maine Senate President Libby Mitchell, who said, "Senator Alfond's passion for building a world class education system makes him the right person to lead the Education Committee. He is dedicated to ensuring that Maine schools are places where kids gain the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in a modern economy."
Senator Alfond was sworn into office December 3, 2008 representing Senate District 8 in the Maine Senate. Alfond is currently serving his first term in the Senate.
